Fixes to my Diets

Image
Based on the guidelines outlined by the text the strengths that I have would be that I consume fat free dairy, grains, a variety of vegetables, a variety of proteins, and oils. The weakness that I have currently is that I do not consume nearly enough whole fruits. Above is a quick youtube video of how to implement more fruit into my diet. Sizer, F. & Whitney, E. (2017).  Nutrition: Concepts and Controversies  (14th ed.). Mason, OH: Cengage Learning.

Cultural Eating

According to Sizer & Whitney (2017) sharing ethnic foods can be symbolic, meaning people offering foods are expressing a willingness to share cherished values with other. One example that I know for a fact I my family does is on the 1 st  day of the new year that black eye peas and collard greens are prepared in celebration of the new year to bring luck and prosperity to the family that year. Another experience is definitely Sunday dinners; one of my aunt’s cooks every Sunday religiously. Almerico (2014) states that: Food has symbolic meanings based on association with other meaningful experiences. An example of the symbolic meanings including food references can be found in many of our common expressions. Bread is a good example of the symbolism found in foods. When people sit together with friends at a meal they are said to break bread with one another. This expression symbolizes a setting where friends come together in a warm, inviting and jovial manner to eat. Br

Nutritional Requirements Across the Lifespan

When deciding to bring a child into the world the father and mother must be wise together in examining the eating and drinking habits because fertility could be affected, before pregnancy all women should be an appropriate body weight because if the woman doesn’t have the proper weight the baby could be born with a low birth weight which is classified as being born with less than 5.5 pounds. Also it is noted that a woman’s nutrition before pregnancy is crucial because it determines if her uterus will be able to support the growth of a healthy placenta.   Once the baby has been born infants typically grow faster in the first year after birth than ever in life, This rapid growth and metabolism of the infant demand an ample supply of nutrients to aid in the growing process of the child. Due to the size of the baby the need smaller total amounts of these nutrients than adults do, but as a percentage of body weight, babies need more than twice as much of most nutrients. As a child

Macro & Micro Nutrition

Image
One of the first major steps into developing a nutrition plan we must break it down to the bare minimum of nutrition. The nutrients are classified into six classes, Carbohydrates, Fats, Protein, Vitamins, Minerals, and Water. (Sizer & Whitney, 2017, p. 7) Out of the six nutrients four of them are organic which are fat, protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins. Of the four organic nutrients carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are energy yielding nutrients, which means that the body can use the energy that come from these nutrients as Sizer & Whitney (2017) explains, it’s also noted that protein can yield energy and provide materials that form structures and working parts of body tissue. The next set of nutrients that make up a persons body are vitamins and minerals. Vitamins and minerals act as regulators, “As regulators, the vitamins and minerals assist in all body processes: digesting food; moving muscles; disposing of wastes; growing new tissues; healing wounds; obtaining en

Connection Between Nutrition & Disease

Image
When deciding on making a lifestyle change one must first analyze the benefits of a well-balanced nutritional plan. The benefits of a well-balanced nutritional plan can affect multiple types of wellness from physical, mental, social, and emotional, etc. According to Sizer & Whitney (2017) the chronic disease such as heart disease, diabetes, some kinds of cancer, dental diseases, and adult bone loss all have a strong connection with poor diet decisions and when looking at those statistics of those diseases most if not all could have been easily prevented with a proper nutrition plan. Once the onset of the disease affects a person other factors come into consideration. Claydon, Austin, & Smith (2016) explains that depression and obesity are highly correlated, with the risk of depression increase as BMI increases, so not only does a person have challenges physically with poor nutrition the same individual faces mental adversities due to poor nutritional choices.  When

The Digestive Process

Image
The Digestive Process The human digestive tract is a group of muscles and organs that help your body make use of the food that you are consuming. By definition the digestive system is the body system composed of organs that break down complex food particles into smaller, absorbable products. The digestive tract and alimentary canal are names for the tubular organs that extend from the mouth to the anus. The whole system, including the pancreas, liver, and gallbladder, is sometimes called the gastrointestinal system according to Sizer & Whitney (2017). Mailman (2015) explains that  each part of the digestive tract is adapted to reduce the size of food particles, either mechanically or enzymatically, until they are small enough to be absorbed into the body. The  National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (2013) states that digestion begins in the mouth with chewing and ends in the small intestine, as food passes through the GI tract, it mixes with digesti
